NATALCARE PLUS has more iron than regular prenatal vitamins. That's what the "plus" is.
They aren't very expensive, HEB has a generic alternative for $4-5,

I am not familiar with the brand you mentioned. I took Centrum Materna for about a week, but they made my urine very very yellow and gave me horrible cramps.
I was prescribed PregVit, which involves two pills, one in the morning and one in the evening. The concentration of vitamins is broken up, largely b/c calcium interferes with iron absorption. When they are consumed together the vitamins are pretty much ineffective. I like this vitamin - I have had no cramping, and as long as I am well hydrated, my urine is clear. I do not know the cost of this as my workplace drug plan covers it.
Folic acid is important, but most important preconception and in the beginning weeks of pregnancy as that is when the fetus' spinal cord is developed. Folic acid is recommended to prevent defects in development. After about 12 or 16 weeks it cannot prevent defects. If you eat a healthy diet you should be able to get enough folic acid through the foods that you eat (grains, cereals, vegetables). Many maternal vitamins still contain folic acid.

I have taken over the counter ones since I found out I was pregnant (at 4 weeks along!) I prefer the spring valley ones. Just try to remember that going cheap aint always better. You get what you pay for and some of the more expensive types of prenatal vitamins have 'higher class'? types of those vitamins if you get what I mean. Look and compare before you buy!

I took Nature's Prenatal by a company called Nature's Sunshine. These were pretty expensive, and on most things I usually get the cheapest available, but it was one thing that I wanted to make sure I had a good quality product, so I spent the extra. I was never prescribed any, just told to get some and take them.

I'm 7 mths and not taking anything still. They made me feel bad and the only thing they could do was prescribe laxatives so I said NO WAY. lol. and stopped taking them. I have heard the Prenatal vitamins you buy at walmart are really good and usually dont have any side effects.

New Chapter Organics Perfect Prenatal..these are the best, especially if you are vegetarian!
Not that this really matters, but Gwyneth Paltrow said in an interview with Vogue that she also took them during her pregnancys and that she credits her long & healthy double processed hair to these vitamins-she even kept taking them after giving birth! Girls got great hair and 2 healthy babies,so I gotta go with her on these vitamins!

Hi, I took those when I was pregnant all 3 times- my doctor prescribed them for me also. The only problem I had was they made me very sick. I ended up figuring out that if I cut them equally into 4 pieces and took 1/4 of the piece every 2 hrs that I did much better. You also have to eat with them, an empty stomach doesn't work with those. Good luck and Congratulations!
