An earwig crawled into my ear while I was sleeping. It was over an inch long.
I woke up and thought I had water rumbling in my ear. My ear did not hurt; there was just the feel and sound of water bubbling loudly in my ear. I tried turning my head to the side and pounding my head with my hand to get the water out: no help. I went to the bathroom to do the water-in-the ear treatment: a cotton ball soaked with isopropyl rubbing alcohol, the alcohol dripped into the ear. I turned my head to the side over the sink, and the earwig crawled out and dropped into the sink. It was still alive, so I flushed it down the toilet.
This happened in 1982 in a rented home in San Diego. I was sleeping in a bedroom on a low level that opened onto the patio. At least a hundred earwigs would crawl up the floor-length drapes of the bedroom at night. I like to study insects, so I did not mind the earwigs; I could not kill that many with spray and still sleep in the room.
I used my dictionary's description (this was 1982, remember) that stated earwigs DID NOT crawl into ears and thought I was safe. Ha! Thank goodness for the Internet information we can use today. And never take the first answer you find as being the ONLY answer.

Yes, it happened to my dad a couple years ago- it was terrifying; he was in so much pain, we thought something ruptured inside his head. My mom took a really close look at his ear before calling an ambulance, and found an earwig, which she was able to remove. It was SO scary. Those things creep me out ever since!

They won't get into my ears now that I'm older and have developed ear hair that is impenetrable to the earwig and other insects , it's the only advantage of getting older lol : )

No. But they did get their name from that common old European superstition.
Course, any insect could just happen to crawl into your ear, but only parasites do it on purpose. Some earwig species eat smaller insects, some eat algae, and some destroy crops like fruit, but none are parasites.
