Mythology, as least according to some such as Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung, is based upon the common experiences of being human. They are based upon what is called the "collective unconscious", a grand shared subconscious that you and I have with every human who has ever lived, simply because we are all human.
There are common stories that have a tendency to occur in most humans lives. Mythology takes these common stories and presents them on a stage where the actors are Gods and Goddesses and other creatures such as dragons and half human beasts, etc. These life situations are acted out, symbolically, in myths.
Myths have always been with us and contain the same type of problems and outcomes, though the background changes from the Greeks to Star Wars.

The word mythology literally means the (oral) retelling of myths – stories that a particular culture believes to be true and that use the supernatural to interpret natural events and to explain the nature of the universe and humanity. In modern usage, "mythology" is either the body of myths from a particular culture or religion (as in Greek mythology, Egyptian mythology or Norse mythology) or the branch of knowledge dealing with the collection, study and interpretation of myths, also known as mythography.

example: The Battle of 300.

It could be both. normally any matter when goes from one person to the next, it gets amplified or rather exaggerated. So, for generations back if an incident has happened it could have manipulated itself into a huge one generations after. For example one thousand years back one fellow jumped over a canal people will say today that he flew over the sea.

Also there could be man made stories to teach people good virtues by involving God into it so that people will listen.

Most people pray, worship or attend temples/churches/mosques etc because of the fear of God rather than in real belief.
