Our notions concerning words and meaning. In a belief system there is an understanding and the Idea is before the belief. Idea as after belief is a different kind of idea, usually for the purpose for acting in accordance to belief law, the proposed result of acting on the belief and its law is the Idea, but that Idea preexisted belief.

'The idea as a process runs through three stages in its development. The first form of the idea is Life: that is, the idea in the form of immediacy. The second form is that of mediation or differentiation; and this is the idea in the form of Knowledge, which appears under the double aspect of the Theoretical and Practical idea. The process of knowledge eventuates in the restoration of the unity enriched by difference. This gives the third form of the idea, the Absolute Idea: which last stage of the logical idea evinces itself to be at the same time the true first, and to have a being due to itself alone.

A belief is a state of mind where you are convinced of a certain truth.
An idea is more or less a thought, usually spontaneous, that is produced much like a reflex of the mind.
Many people will say that there really isn't a straightforward definition for either term as both go hand in hand.

A belief is something that is given to you as you grow and you can either choose to accept that belief or not. An idea is thought created solely by the individual.

An idea may be radical or not and all that you can find in between. An idea may be purely rational. A belief is something more deeply connected to faith. A belief is stronger although not necessarily correct.

As stated in Dogma...it's a lot easier to change an idea than it is a belief.

I suppose this means that beliefs are more strongly tied into values and morals. People are more apt to defending their beliefs than their ideas (though they do defend their ideas).

An idea has not been proved yet, while a belief has at least been tested to be of some valid truth.

An idea is something you can still change your mind about. When a person has an idea, he is open to suggestions from others.

A belief is something that you have decided on. The tendency is to see a belief as 'truth' or 'fact'.
