First off, cheerleading was invented solely as a distraction during actual sporting events like football or basketball. Most of the time, cheerleaders are just there to look pretty and get the crowd revved up during an actual sporting event.
Ok, so there are cheerleading competitions, which blurs the line a bit. But in my opinion, ALL 'sports' with subjective judging (i.e. gymnastics, figure skating, freestyle skateboarding, etc) are not really sports. Whenever someone's opinion plays a key role in scoring, you're really more in the 'activity' area.
Now, I'm not saying cheerleading isn't difficult or competitive (at competitions, not cheering at games), or that I do not respect the abilities of cheerleaders. But if you call cheerleading a sport, you must also call ballroom dancing, beauty pageants and wet t-shirt contests sports as well, and put cheerleaders in the same category.

I think that people think of sports as an athletic game or competitive match ups where you are competing with an opponent simultaneously. In cheering at an event there isn't a winner or loser among the cheerleaders but they lead the crowd in cheering on their favorite team. In cheerleading competition scores are derived and compared but there isn't any head to head physical competition so it is more like a performance than a sport. Dance competition or aerobic competition would be comparable. It definitely takes a lot of skills to be a good cheerleader and you have to be in good physical shape but it doesn't fit my definition of a sport.

I like to think of sports as having a winner and a loser. Cheerleading obviously doesn't qualify. I have no problem with recognizing the athletic ability involved by the participants. And many of my best friends are girls/women.

Cheering at a game is not a sport, its an activity. You aren't given any points and you aren't truely competing. You are performing and helping the athletes, similar to the band.
The cheerleader contests are what I would consider sport. There you are competing against other squads in physical competition. You are given points and they determine 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, etc.

First thing ,Girls are not snots. I think cheerleading is cool. I believe it is a sport just like football or baseball. Who cares what other people think, if you like it you should do it.

It's an activity.
Sports have winners and losers. Your main activity is to rah-rah for the crowd, which is not competition. It's an activity AT the competition, whose participants are the sports team in question.
Yes, I know you have competitions with other schools, etc. That isn't your primary task, though.
I also have a hard time taking it seriously because looks enter into it. An ugly fat kid who tries out for the football team and can do the moves is in. An ugly fat kid who tries out for cheerleading and can do the moves is out.

I think it is more of a club activity like the math team and spelling teams or a dance team but it isnt a sport like football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse and so on. But cheerleaders are often very sexy- though snobby

It's not considered a sport by people because ya don't get scholarships to attend college if you're a cheerleader.

i don't really consider it a sport, but they do stunts and stuff and they go to competitions so it's active, but it's not like a sport sport because the reason they are there is to cheer for the actual sport. so it's not a sport, it's an activity.
