It would be hard to make an argument for anyone better than Rickey Henderson. He could hit, steal bases, and worked pitchers as well as anyone. Part of what teams want is for hitters to run up pitch counts so other batters can see what and how the pitcher is throwing that day. Rickey had the career record for walks (since broken by Bonds).

Rickey Henderson. The numbers speak for themselves: 3055 hits, 1406 stolen bases (Lou Brock isn't even close), 2295 runs scored (first all time), 2190 walks (second only to Barry Bonds).

And on top of that, he has 297 career home runs, which is very good for a leadoff hitter whose prime came before the "steroid era".

Rickey Henderson. Anyone who says otherwise is biased. There was nor will there ever be anyone better as a leadoff hitter. (and I'm a Mets fan, not an Oakland fan)

i second that emotion- rickey henderson

there is no other choice- career .300 hitter. More lead off homeruns than anyone, ever and once he got on base, forgetaboutit, a boat load of stolen bases

maybe Ichiro, Ricky Henderson, Derek Jeter....Maury Wills, Lou Brock. I would tend to go with a fast running left hand hitter that gets down the line quickly.

Lou Brock's name needs to be mentioned. Both he and Henderson have 3000 hits, so, this is a toss up for me.
