There's hope, faith and charity; they go together in Christianity, and are considered the three most important virtues.

In Buddhism, hope and fear are the things you should avoid. They cause you to worry about the future instead of being calm in the present.

Getting away from traditional stuff, I associate hope with optimism and enthusiasm. Depressed people usually lack hope.

For kids, it is that wonderful sense of thinking that wonderful things can happen, like Christmas presents.

Another association would be "forlorn hope", hope that is just a way of trying to keep from facing reality, such as when you think that your fisherman son, whose ship went down in a storm, isn't really dead and will come back some day.
