Hi! I recently asked a question about wether I could upgrade my PC's processor. I called Alienware Tech Support, gave them my info, and said that I could. They then gave me two options on processors that I could have them install. Problem is, I'm a little strapped for cash, so I'd rather get it from a place like Newegg. I asked him if I bought one from a store and installed it, what would happen, and he said it would void my warranty. Should I take that risk, or should I just save up?

Forgot to mention this computer is almost brand-new. I got a kickass card, NVIDIA 8800 GTS, just cheaped out on the processor. Didn't think 2.0 and 2.6 were very different.

If you know how to take care of your PC well, the warranty would just be for peace of mind. Most of your problems would be software related rather than hardware related.

Izzy is right. Each major component in a PC carries warranty. Usually, it's 1-2 years through the local or in-country distributor and could be as much as 3-5 years from the manufacturer (such as Seagate).

If you are willing to void warranty by buying a new processor from Newegg, why not try to overclock your current processor first. 25-30% overclock is mild and easy these days. It is easily attained at stock voltages, thus SAFE. Just ensure good case ventilation, then there is no cause for worry.

If you know how to do it, go for it.

If you're already upgrading the CPU, the PC is probably not worth much anymore, even though you probably payed out the wazoo for an Alienware.

Warranties on PC's are a sham anyway. If you built your own PC through newegg.com, each component carries it's own warranty from the MANUFACTURER, so Alienware is just ripping you off.
