It does seem like a good way to get road use funds for those that are using the roads at greater fuel economy. Whether you buy 2 gallons of gas or 8 gallons of gas the road usage IS the same.

However, I would be suspicious that the cost per gallon would not beproperly discounted, and you would just see the increase created by the per mile tax.

No, that state needs to get their act together and push through a raise in the gas tax. The current gas tax gives incentive for people to buy efficient cars and will help reduce reliance on fossil fuels. A per mile tax will eliminate this incentive. It does mention that there are options for a lower rate for efficient vehicles and for people who avoid certain areas, but I think that would just make matters more complicated. Right now, a simple gas tax is the best solution, and if the people of Oregon don't want to raise it, then I think it is in their government's best interest to convince the people. Some brave politicians might not get reelected in doing this, but I think it would be for the better.

Yes, if you drive alot you pay. Transportation truck business would pay alot to keep the roads up and they are the ones who are mostly responsible for the maintenance of the roads because of the weight of the trucks. Also I believe state vehicles should be included in this per mile tax also. Do you know if they are? The legislatures and all government vehicles should be included in this tax. The poorer people and elderly people who do not drive much would be helped by this per mile tax. I am all for this bill.

Hmm... kinda like annual car taxes - could work. I'd like to see the results of the research study after - to see how affective it really is (along with feedback from the volunteers).
I know bc I fill up at least once a week bc of my commute to work, and daily errands, etc, constant gas tax is always a factor for me. Maybe just one lump sum every year would work out for a driver like me.

If I had a hybrid or electric vehicle, I might support it. But since it'll be a while before they replace the old internal combustion cycle, I'd rather not.
