Need Help with wireless connection?

I just bought a new Compaq laptop.
Not sure why its not connecting to the network at home even though i have DSL cable for my desktop. If i click at " find available network" it still doesn't show any network....
Any suggestions?

Be sure the wireless functionality on your laptop is turned on (there is often a small extenal switch)

Do you actually have a wireless router? It sounds like you only have a modem, which you will have to connect to directly unless you buy a wireless router.
