I am very good in math in high school, but was either thinking about engineering or pharmacy. Does it matter if I do not select a major in my Freshman year, or will I be taking some classes that I don't need? I wanted to keep my option open to see whats available for my future.

I think you're more likely to get a good field if you take a subject like Agriculture & Farming.

During your freshman year you do not necessarily have to select a major. This year you will be taking all your college level math classes, science, and other core classes that you would have to take regardless. I think during this year you can think about what you want to do but have a plan come your sophomore year.

most of your first year of classes are all general education classes. you have to take them regardless of your major. if you're not sure what field you want to go into, visit the academic advising office. they may have quizzes/surveys you can fill out to help you determine which field would be right for you. i would also find out more about the majors that you're currently interested in. get the course catalog and see what classes are required, then meet with someone in the department to find out more. most professors are more than willing to brag their own department up.

My guess is that it does not matter. They'll waste your time on general classes for the first year anyway. Talk to your advisor and hedge your bets a little with a class or two from your fall-back-on major.

you dont have to choose a major now at all.
however..
it might help to make a rough estimate now because you probably would like to choose a school that excels in your area of study. i decided to change majors to pharmacy too late and learned my school did not have a pharmacy program so now I have to switch schools in the middle of my degree. Pharmacy programs aren't as common in schools as youd think. good luck with the choice!
