Honestly, it's not worth the stress. With PC prices as low as they are now, it would be completely worth your time to go get a complete package and not have to worry.

The cable people provide the modem.

The cost of upgrade exceeds that of a new computer unless your not using it for games and graphics. High speed Internet might appreciate a faster computer. Just updating windows was 249 megabytes of disk space. Have you got 20 or 40 gigs. My computer is five years old and it has 80 gigs and 248 mb ram. DSL is cheaper then cable and very fast, comes over the phone line, is on all the time and doesn't interfere with the phone. They provide the equipment. NetZero is 17.95 a month, I believe it's for the first year and then 21.95 a month, although I heard cable at 38.95 includes some cable stations, for how long I don't know.
You know how they do things anymore. A home phone you can carry around with battery $10 to replace the battery is $20 and up. A new printer with cartridge, $30, replacement ink cartridge $40. Upgrading impossible and computers coming down. Even Walmart usually has them and does now under $400. Even a second hand one is better than an upgrade price wise. If I could get a $100 for mine I'd be surprised.
