Evelyn; Are we talking about a wireless system or a wired network? Well, in either case, make sure you've loaded the network adapter's drivers, before you try to connect. Also, if the router is attached to another computer, make sure you're all on the same network workgroup... you can check the workgroup name, right click the my computer icon, and selecting properties. At the properties window, You should see computer name, and workgroup name... there's also a button to select, in order to change the name of the PC and/or Workgroup name. All the computers in the houst should be in the same workgroup, something somple, like Williams45 could be the name of the workgroup in a home of the Williams' house. Select Apply and then to get to the device manager, (to see if there's a need to update drivers) select device manager tab at the top. In the device manager window, see if there are any yellow question marks or exlamatioin marks... that indicates a problem with your hardware... once all the yellow marks are gone, then you're computer is all set!

If you don't have the driver CDs for the network card, try going to another computer, and getting them off the internet, and putting it on a flash pendrive, or some other media. I'm willing to bet it's your network card that doesn't have the drivers yet... if that's not it, feel free to send me an offline message IM, and I'll get back to ya!

Take Care;
Marcos

Most home networks don't require you to type in an IP -- this is done automatically by your router via the DHCP mechanism. Anyways, you can make changes to what you entered by clicking Start...Settings... Control Panel
Double click Network
RIGHT click on Local Area Connection...select Properties
Left click on TCP/IP...click Properties
