i dont understand why the age to buy alcohol is still 21. If the US considers an 18 yr old as an adult who can vote, buy cigarettes, drive, go to college, etc., why cant they purchase alcohol? Everyone knows that 18 yr olds drink alcohol anyway, why not give them the right to purchase? I am over 21, but before, as an 18, 19, 20 yr old college student, it felt stupid that i had to get an older person to buy alcohol, when i considered myself an adult.

Is there anyway the age limit will be lowered? do you think it ever will?

The whole idea behind the higher legal age is to keep the alcohol out of the hands of kids who are 13, 14, 15, 16 many of these kids do not know individuals that are 21 who are willing to risk everything to buy for them. Many 18 year old individuals on the other hand often do not have the common sense to tell someone no. It is not about keeping the alcohol out of the hands of 18 year old or older, but the ones that are younger.

It will never be lowered. The federal government decided some years ago to withhold federal road-building funds from states who did not raise the age to 21.

The difference between the USA and other industrialized countries is that much of the USA has no public transport. When I was 18 (living in the UK) I could go out to the football, get drunk afterwards and get public transport to within 100 yards of my front door. If American teenagers want to socialize, it usually means someone driving. That is a serious problem when alcohol is involved.

I doubt it will go lower than 21 ever again. Have you been to a bar lately??? The 21 year olds are bad enough, immature and acting like obnoxious jerks.... you really want to go out and spend a night in a bar listening to drunk HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS???

I had to wait, you had to wait, we ALL had to wait. It's part of growing up. You want to smoke at 18 and kill yourself, that's your business. But if your'e 18 and wasted, that's everyone's problem lol.

You're right, it IS stupid. It's also unlikely to change. It is extremely rare when a bunch of do-gooders curtail your rights then relent and allow you to exercise them again.

I sure hope not.

And just because teens are doing it does not justify reducing the age again.
