Very first poetry class you have, if the teacher is worth her weight in salt, they will tell you: To make it good, you need to focus on the SHOWING more than the TELLING. This requires that you use description to set mood and use metaphor to drive meaning.

The best thing you can do, is read lots and lots of poems. Break them down, and understand them. This helps better than anything else toward making your own poems better.

Do well.

The first thing you need is something worth saying.
next, you need to decide how to say it.(direct, indirect)
next, you must decide the form (free verse, rhyme, etc.)
next, sit back, close your eyes, and try to "hear" your poem develop...I mean to picture in your mind's eye the images that express what you're trying to say...then let the words start to form that would describe that picture to others.

An example, say you saw an apple sitting on a table and it made you think of how your mother used to always put an apple in your lunchbox for school. If you decided you wanted to write a poem about mothers who cared for their children, or about how an apple was the symbol of love of parent to child, or how you couldn't look at an apple but think of your mother, etc., you would then start picturing images in your head that conveyed that message, then write them down. If it turned out that you could say it in rhyme, great...if the rhyme refuses to come, then write it in open or free verse. The important thing is communication of the idea...don't tell us, show us, let us see those images that you had in your head so we can feel them too. To make it "good", you need to be a good communicator, and that might take some time and practice. Like anything you seek to be good at, you need to practice, practice, practice.

and most of all...keep writing

I believe a mastery of English is the first prerequisite. I wouldn't expect anyone to write a decent symphony without knowing which notes are going to come out of the piano.

I like to use an even amount of metaphor and imagery in my poetry. A little sentiment, but not too much. I also like it when my poetry is slightly ambiguous. I'm not a big fan of using exact rhyme in my poetry, exact rhyme can come out very corny. Slant rhyming is cool.
