What are Shakespeare, Grotowski, Brecht, Ardaud, ect.?

Question

Like what do you call them when talking about the styles they created,
playwrights? cause they did more than write plays.

As a professor who teaches all of the above, they all are known for different things in the theatre. As noted above, William Shakespeare was a playwright, a poet, an actor, and a shareholder in his theatre company (making him a producer of sorts). But we remember him mainly as playwright as that has been his most lasting and influential mark on theatre.

Jerzy Grotowski and Bertolt Brecht were playwrights, but both of them are considered directors before anything else. But don't forget their theory! They are also both theatre theorists extraordinaire!

Now Antonin Artaud is another story--he's most widely known for his theories of theatre and not for his other contributions. Why? Because his playwriting was dreadful and honestly never illustrated his ideas adequately.

But as a group--I think the only real common link here is that they are all "theatre artists." Of course, they are all "writers" but you can't really credit them all as playwrights across the board. Each of these men was an incredibly influential and important theatre artist.

Shakespeare is rightly called a playwright, though he did write poetry as well. Shakespeare did not create an acting style. His actors used the style which was common during Shakespeare's time. Jerzy Growtowski, Bertolt Brecht and Antonin Artaud are also playwrights since they wrote plays. They could also be called dramatists. The styles of acting which they introduced ... well, I don't think this gives them any additional "title".
