When I was a kid I had no need for 50p, I just wanted my nanny-goats milk, but humans nicked it off me.
When I was a child I could get 960 black jacks for 10/-
but I never had that much money for sweets.
For Americans, pence originally there were 240 pence to a £1, since decimalisation there are just 100 (new) pence to a pound.
1 pence is now worth about 2 cents.

50 pence here is about 20 cents...
You could probably get 2 pieces of gum for that when I was a kid. Not anymore.

My brother bought a mars bar, and a marathon (snickers) and because he came back with change, mum told him to go and get a milky way for our sister and he still had 1 and a half pence left out of 10p.
So for ten bob, we could have got a huge loada goodies.

'66 a 10 bob note [10 shillings] would get me 13 English-made 'Matchbox' cars!
'75 a 50 pence piece [ pence = plural of penny ] would get me a pint of beer and a gallon of petrol!
Note; As others have said; Shillings = pre-decimalisation; Penny/Pence = post-decimalisation.

I was horse mad and before my Mum bought me my own I could rent one for half a day for 10/-
My dinner money at school was 5/- a week so I used to buy a bag of chips every day for 6pence instead and at the end of the week I had saved 2s 6p for my horse riding (sorry mum!)
It's a good job I had breakfast and a good evening meal at home!
