I was recently informed that a person from our home insurance took photos of our property for no reason other than to snoop and I wasn't home at the time. They told me they don't need to tell me when they come or for what reason. We have had insurance with them for 11 years. They interrogated me about this and that. can they do that if you haven't turned in a claim?

Hold up, Sue, I'm already seeing some bogus answers.
First off, this will vary somewhat from state to state. Check with your state's "insurance law".
You can pretty much bet that in your policy they are allowed to come around periodically and update with photos, etc. This is just them doing their job, they probably have been doing this either annually or every 2 or 3 years the whole time and you just never noticed. You gave them permission when you bought the policy.

This is standard practice. Doesn't the electric company read the meter? Doesn't the water company read the meter? You have an active contract with this company. You ARE doing business with them.
They weren't doing this "for no reason other than to snoop". They are doing it to make sure your policies have correct valuations. If they didn't come around once in awhile and check, people would make improvements and 15 years later they'd have a claim and take a hosing on they payout. The insurance company is also looking out for your interests.

You guys are not only way overreacting, you just basically don't understand how insurance works. What have you got to hide? You're doing business with the company. Join the 3rd millenium. Get over yourselves.

You may want to check the small print of your insurance policy. It may say that the insurance company can come and inspect the property they are insuring.

your insurance policy retains the right to inspect the property during the time the insurance is issued to ensure compliance, thus by the insurance contract they have the right
