Ok I have just recently rebuilt myself a new computer but have kept my old 6800xt gpu and if I go into my system settings is says that I have DX10, now I know this sounds dumb but its crazy. Unless NVIDIA is trying to rip us off then there is something wrong. Here is the systen info. http://groups.msn.com/DarkWolfHome/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1

You can have DirectX 10 loaded. It will even work fine. But what does not work are the DirectX 10 special commands. Instead, your card will use DirectX 9.0c commands. This is not a problem until DirectX 10 games start being sold (that are any good). Then you might want the features.

For example, many people have IGP chips instead of video cards. These people run DirectX 9 (or 10). On your system in Oblivion, for example, you would see nice shiny water. A system with IGP will see a gray shaded plane of water. You both have DirectX, but the output is different based on your graphics hardware.

Don't worry about this.

Hehe... the card itself only supports DirectX 9 but since you are using Vista, the software version of DirectX you're running is 10.

For Nvidia, the only cards which have DX10 hardware support are the new 8000 series (8600, 8800 etc)

Unfortunately a 6800xt is only compliant to DX9. If you want to play a DX10 you will have to buy a new card. I do have good news for you though. Nvidia 8600gt are very reasonably priced.
