The Corporation (2004)
An epic in length and breadth, this documentary aims at nothing less than a full-scale portrait of the most dominant institution on the planet Earth in our lifetime.
The Corporation defines this endlessly mutating life-form in exhaustive detail, measuring the many ways it has not only come to dominate but to deform our reality. The movie performs a running psychoanalysis of this entity with the characteristics of a prototypical psychopath: a callous unconcern for the feelings and safety of others, an incapacity to experience guilt, an ingrained habit of lying for profit, etc.
Brutal...and brilliant

When We Were Kings (1997)
Decades ago, documentary filmmaker Leon Gast attempted to complete a feature about the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" championship bout between boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire. Sundry complications, though, held up the project until its release in 1996. It was well worth the delay. A piece of work.

Capturing the Friedmans (2002)
A Sundance Grand Jury prize winner and a true conversation starter, Capturing the Friedmans travels into one apparently ordinary Long Island family's heart of darkness. Arnold and Elaine Friedman had a normal life with their three sons until Arnold was arrested on multiple (and increasingly lurid) charges of child abuse. HBO has produced some great sports documentaries. One is Long Shots: The Life and Times of the American Basketball Association.

And an outstanding documentary about Hurricane Katrina made by Spike Lee titled When The Levees Broke is one you would like.

Why not try "Paradise Lost- the story of the Robin Hood Hills child murders"

I have seen this documentary and it will provide many discussion points for your class. There is also a sequel which is very interesting also.

It was made by HBO and I have seen it for sale on Ebay as well as other places online.

Cheers!

The Devil's Playground was great..
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293088/

It's about Amish teenagers at the point when they are allowed to do whatever they want.. from about 16 to about 21 .. they get to experiment, see the world.. whatever they want to do.. they then decide if they want to stay Amish.. if they do not.. the families wish them well.. and don't really shun them.. if however, they confirm with the church and THEN decide they no longer want to be Amish they are shunned.. Very interesting documentary..
