I have an idea for a new type of product, but I would like to make a prototype myself to test it out. I was wondering if someone can give me some tips on how to make it out of plastic? What to make the mold out of (cheap and easy)? What type of plastic should I use and where can I get it (needs to be pretty strong)? Something thats basic & that would be easy to use for a guy in his garage.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the liquid latex answer, I'l give that a try. Where do you think would be the best place to get it?
As for what type of plastic...I'm not sure what I should use. I need something that I can melt and poor easily into the molds, and that will harden with a fare amount of strength...I'm open to any suggenstions.

Thanks again!

i found a great website for a company that has some great instructional videos for what you are trying to do.. they have great products but may be a little pricey. i spent about $200 making a mold, but i must say that i was completely satisfied with the materials. i used a polyurethane to make my mold.....very strong and durable. email me at predatorpio@yahoo.com ....if you have any question. the website : http://www.freemansupply.com/video/preparing/liquid.htm

For a prototype you should use plaster and clay to carve your initial "male" pattern from, then using poly vinyl alcohol ( PVA , Elmers Glue) coat the pattern with a release agent then cast an epoxy/fiber moulding to make a female mold. then using the same process make your parts out of epoxy/fiber composites until you can have a $50,000 injection mold made.... go to the library and read up on model making, it is not really that hard!
good luck!

Liquid latex is good for molds and stays pliable. As for the type of plastic, we would need more info. A liquid, sheets, or what?
