Anwerer number 3 is incorrect, it will stay on your credit report for 7-10 years is correct. But you can start rebuilding your credit as soon as your bankruptcy is discharged. Assuming that you are looking into Chapt 7. People start sending you offers quickly, because they know that you cannot file Bankruptcy again for 7-10 years, so you have to be careful after the bankruptcy discharges, to make a full effort to rebuild your credit. If you have the extra money to pay for credit counseling and your monthly bills I would say do it. But if you are in a bind, just go ahead and contact a bankruptcy attorney, to see if you qualify.
good luck.

As a last resort. It will really mess you up for 7 to 10 years or longer. Instead, check with a credit counceling company. There are lots of them out there, christian and secular ones that specifically work with you to get out of debt. They contact your creditors and pool all your finances into one pot so that you pay them and they pay the creditors. They get your interest rates lowered so that your combined amount you own them is several hundred dollars less than paying your bills separately. It works really well and will actually improve your credit instead if kill it for good. When you go bankrupt, you can't charge or borrow nothing for a long time.
