executive (that's the President and the Vice President)
judicial (that's the Supreme Court) and,
legislative (that's the Congress, which consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives)
some think that the military is a branch, but the military is under the executive branch, with the President as commander in chief.

as i remember (i sure hope I am right) they are
executive (President)
judicial (Supreme Court)
legislative (Congress)
i believe they are to check and balance each other
i don't deserve the 10 points but i think that is it
i loved the whole Schoolhouse Rock thing (probably before your time) where they compared the government to a 3 ring Circus
at the time I didn't realize it but it is true in more ways than one
lol

First-I recommend you study the form- rather, you would be shocked at how smart those founding fathers have been. 2nd-Thank your fortunate stars you reside in usa and characteristic co-equivalent branches of government!
