No as their economy is entirely dependent on that of the USA. However, a communist system is next door to slavery (you work - government provides all - just like the slave masters) so people do as little as they can get away with and there is little pride in doing a good job. This means quality control is poor and workers do whatever it takes to keep the numbers up so they are not punished and managers will take whatever shortcuts they can to apparently meet standards and so not be sent to a re-education camp (gulag).

No, Mattel (and other companies) are intentionally using dirt cheap Chinese labor and materials and then making a fortune off of unsuspecting American consumers!!

After the massive toy recall, the toothpaste recall and the bird flu....I must admit that it crossed my mind. But then I took a step back and thought about it more and came to the conclusion that China has much lower standards than the US does concerning consumer safety and product quality.

First they went for the pets; then the toothpaste had coolant in it; there's the problem with food that originates from there, making people sick and warnings not to eat it; toys now...Makes one wonder, doesn't it?
8/16/07: just read in today's paper that now baby bibs are being recalled due to lead that is in the plastic...what's next w/this country?

it isn't the chinese.
It is the greedy american corporations.
They send our jobs overseas to save money on labor and they put our children in danger, I will never buy another item that is made by mattel.
Better start checking all the toy companies because all of them are made outside the U.S.
Even Mcdonald's happy meal toy are made in china.
we are killing our own kids with these foriegn made toys.
time to boycott all the major U.S. toy manufacturers until they bring the jobs back home. which will never happen.

No, they're just mass producing as cheaply as possible, and cutting corners to keep costs down. They're idiots, not murderers.

with all that msg they have been poisoning adults for decades.
seriously -- its just a big huge obvious flaw in capitalism laid bare. i would hate to think how many people would pimp their grandma if they thought they could make 50 bucks.
