Out west mostly refers to an area of the US that is west of the Continental Devide, the Mighty Rocky Mountains. As a historical term, West was also described as being in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, but geographically this would be called the South West.

Usually out west is west of the Mississippi river. The arch of St. Louis is on the Mississipii.
