Out west mostly refers to an area of the US that is west of the Continental Devide, the Mighty Rocky Mountains. As a historical term, West was also described as being in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, but geographically this would be called the South West.

Out west. This is because many pioneers left their families "back east" to move to cheap or free land "out west." "Up north" and "down south" probably originates more from the American Civil War than from anything else.
