When a car honks and people walking on the sidewalk look towards it, why do they do that? Even though the honking is directed towards another car, not at the person.

For the same reason they look at a goose that honks.

People think that someone might be in need of their attention so they don't get run over or that maybe the person in the car is looking for them to give them a ride or just waving to a friend.

It's basically just a normal human reaction to a noise or sound that registers as a warning.

Good Luck!

because what if it is not directed at another car, and the car that is honking is going out of control and getting ready to run down every person on the sidewalk?

Because the horn was placed on cars to get peoples attention...hence people looking at them when they honk.

Because it startles them and they may want to see why the car is honking.

They may not know who the honk was directed at.

I have no idea, when I'm walking and I hear a car horn,I never look around(if they want me than they must call my name,)In this day and age you looking around could get you in trouble.
