Anyone know what the electron geometries of Phosphorus Trifluoride & Phosphorus Pentafluoride are? Also, what are their polarity?

phosphorus trifluoride, PF3: Polar
electron domain geometry is tetrahedral
molecular geometry is trigonal pyramidal

phosphorus pentafluroide, PF5: Nonpolar
electron domain geometry is trigonal bipyramidal
molecular geometry is also trigonal bipyramidal

PF3: Imagine P sitting on a tripod of three F's. The F's are slightly negatively charged. The P is positively charged. The molecule is unsymmetrical. So the polarity is directed in the direction of the P-F bonds, all of them.

PF5: This molecule is symmetrical. It is a trigonal bipyamid, with all P(+)-F(-) charges directed symmetrically in all directions.

firstly phosphorus trifluoride is PF3. phosphorous has five electrons in its valence shell. it needs three electrons to complete its octet and these three electrons come from fluorine . three out of five electrons get paired with three electrons from three fluorine atoms. two electrons are left unpaired. see the following dot str. PLS DO NOT CONFUSE WITH THE LINES DRAWN . SEE THE STR. WITHOUT THEM. I HAVE DONE THAT JUST TO CLEARLY DRAW THE STR. ____.. F (:) P (:) F. ___ (..) ____ F the electron pair in parenthesis are the three bonded pairs while one is the lone pair. the shape is gonna be pyramidal as in case of ammonia, NH3.

Off the top of my head I know that PF3 is tetrahedral, with dipole moments going towards F b/c fluorine is sooo electronegative. There is a lone pair "on top" of the P, with the 3 F atoms downward - kinda like methane.

Sorry I don't know much about PF5...
