ok, i dont see how this doesnt make sense....how many quarters (u.s. 25 cent pieces) does it take to fill up a 5 gallon water jug?

This actually can be answered, but we must assume a few things.

a. all the quarters are of equal mass and composition using the modern standard of 91.67% Copper and 8.33% Nickel.
b. the 5 gallon jug holds exactly 5 gallons, no more, no less.
c. the quarters may be melted down to fit, otherwise the #'s of quarters would be subjective since there would be empty space depending how you filled the jug
d. there is no loss of mass due to melting

If we can assume these things, then it is a relatively simple process.

Basically we need to equate the quarter with the volume of 5 gallons in some way.

We start off by finding the mass of a single quarter which is 0.00567kg.

Since we will be working in metric, we need to be able to convert the Volume of the jug accordingly. 5 gallons can be converted to 22.0244 Liters. If we were to fill the jug with pure water at a temperature of 4ºC till we had 22.0244 Liters of it, we would have 22.0244 kg of water since water has a density of 1 kg per liter. Mathematically this is shown as:

density of water = mass / Volume
1kg/L = m / 22.0244L
m = 22.0244kg

Therefore the jug can hold 22.0244 kg of water. Since we know each quarter weighs 0.00567kg, we just put this into a simple formula:

mass of water = mass of quaters

We can do this because in displacement, if we were to put the quarters into the jug with water in it, they would displace an equal mass of water. Let x = the number of quarters.

22.0244kg = 0.00567kg * x
x = 3884.374

Therefore the jug could hold 3884 whole quarters if they were melted down and filled the jug completely with no empty space.

1 1/4 gallons.

A silly question deserves a silly answer.
