I've noticed that a lot of people who advocate wearing protective gear all the time usually make comments about chaps. What do you do to protect your legs? It's time to retire my old leathers, they're all worn out. On Monday, I bought a jacket I liked. Textile, armor, etc, etc... The old chaps are as bad as the old jacket and get tossed too. What do I replace them with? New leather chaps would seem silly, even to me.
Suggestions? Recommendations? Tall stories, even?

I suppose I deserved that for asking what to wear!

Put it up your pipe there, harleyhater. The key is to slide on your back, not your backside. At least that's how I do it. What protects you, SPF40?

Hit the button too soon......... thanks for the answer, it's what I want. Just touched a nerve. The chaps do protect, and I don't race.

Yep, noass. Besides, when I pick my feet up to keep the bike from sliding into me the butt comes up. Can't help it.
And I told you before, the cash in my pocket is all the finance I need.

You can get armored pants in leather or textile. There are also riding jeans like Draggin' Jeans. The best is going to be leather pants with armor but textile can be ok as well. It just doesn't have the resistance to abrasion that leather has.
Myself, I wear a pair of Cortec textile pants. Haven't had any offs with them though so I can't comment on that.

Chaps are beyond useless, they were designed for keeping brush off your legs when horse riding, leathers and textile motorcycle gear is for keeping your skin on, if you dont value your ***, crotch, or back of your legs feel free to wear the chaps. There are plenty of slip on textile over pants some that are warm and even mesh ones.

I like chaps myself but if you are trying the textile coat I would have to try the matching pants also. Change isn't always bad. I might would even try a Harley if I had the cash. Of course in warm weather jeans will have to do.

Saw something the other day for dirt bikers. A 2-piece poly-
synthetic having pieces of fall protection at spine, chest, arm,
groin, tailbone, and leg but all stitched upon black netting of
the velcro closure type. Think of the Star Wars Stormtrooper
in black with brass studs as their issued off-duty BDU. No
retro helmet or space boots 'tho.

Mesh pants like the ones from Joe Rocket are very good in protecting your legs. I wear a light pair of pants under them like the quick dry pants you can find at Aerostitch.com. They have zip off legs so they can double as shorts. I have ridden with that combo for many years. When it gets cold I put my rainsuit bottoms over them.

You live in NH right? Well's here's just a thought. Warwick Mills in New Ipswich, NH makes this product called "Turtleskin". Best motorcycle gloves on the market.
Take a ride down there and see if you can buy some of their turtleskin material stock off the roll and take it to a quality tailor and have new pants tailor made to fit you "like a glove".
Not a cheap route to go but I'll bet it lasts you a lifetime and you won't regret a single penny you had to spend on it.

My two cents worth is go with the balistic nylon (textile) pants that match your jacket and stay away from the chaps, unless you own a horse and there is that whole Village People look about them.

I have some leather pants but for protection and keeping the cold off my legs I'm going to stick with chaps. Easy to take off and carry in a saddlebag.

Chaps are gay and they don't protect your legs/as for shite
Ever watch a superbike race you will never see a rider sliding on his face.
Why? It is the natural reaction to get on your back. And we all know chaps suck because there is no butt in them
Textile is tough stuff the mesh pants are great better than chaps ever were and no village people look(another plus)
The homos saying chaps are great are the wanna be bikers that paid for the image and think thats whats cool Of course when you finance chaps your even cooler
how do you slide on your back without scraping yoass?
you must have the noassatall syndrome.
Go with the leather pants for the david hasselhoff look
WAF he is
