Same denom : just add numerators of fractions, and use the common denom in your answer

Different denom : find common denom, get both in terms of new denom, then add numerators, using the new denom in your answer

Example : 2 2/3 + 3 2/3 = 2 + 3 + 2/3 + 2/3 = 5 + 4/3 = 6 1/3
Example : 3 1/6 + 2 1/4 = 3 + 2 + 2/12 + 3/12 = 5 5/12

If with the same denominator to find the sum of the fractions just add the numerators and the new fraction will have a new numerator with the sum of numerators. In subtraction, just find the difference of the fractions, the difference being the new numerator. In all cases, the denominator of the new fraction is the same as with the old.

If the denominators are different the least common denominator must first be found. This denominator will be the new denominator of the new fraction. After adjusting the numerators to the least common denominator you can proceed with the procedure stated above.

well you have to find a common denominator for both of the fractions to do that you have to find a common multiple for the denominators if you know how to do that (coming from a 12 year
old in the eighth grade)
ex: 2/3 + 1/2

2/3 * 2= 4/6

1/2 * 3= 3/6

simply: 4/6 + 3/6= 1 1/6

You make the denominators the same by multiplying both numerator and denominator by a suitable number. Example: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

With the same denominator you just add the numerators and divide by the common denominator, e.g.

a/b + c/b = (a + c)/b

With different denominators, you have to convert the fractions to a common denominator. Usually this is done as follows:

a/b + c/d = a*d/b*d + c*b/d*b = [a*d + c*b]/b*d

This is something you should have mastered by fifth grade. It has not changed since then.

you need to find the common denonimator
ex: 1/4 + 5 + 3/5
is the same as 4/20 + 100/20 + 12/20
