try your state bar assn. or in a few states like NJ it's the state court system that has discipinary records of lawyers. you particularly want to know if he has a disciplinary history. here are some other good resources:

Most state bar associations have a website where you can look up basic information about an attorney - name, address, telephone number, undergraduate school, law school, whether the bar has ever disciplined the lawyer. The California State Bar website is www.calbar.org.
