Last time I had to buy rotors for my car in came in a box of two, we just took my husbands car in for tires/brakes and they said we needed rotors. Usually I would go to the parts store myself and get the parts and bring them for installation, but I didn't this time. So I'm just curious if they don't come in two's always. I looked up the part on napaonline, but it doesn't specify how many are in there.... I dunno...

the price at napa was $36 and I was charged $52 twice from the mechanic???

and I understand the mechanic will charge more for the part, that's where they make their money, that's not my complaint at all.... I really don't have a complaint... just curiousity about what quantity is for the the price. Guess I could just call napa and ask them how many rotors I'm going to get for that price.

No rotors arn't sold on two's. the price on napaonline is for a single rotor only. the reason that most are sold in pairs is becouse both rotors usually wear at the same rate, and if one is undersized than most likley the otherone will be close to the same size (thickness) Some fords and corvetts even have directional rotors, a left and right. If you had a bad caliper and it wore out one rotor very fast, what are you going to do with the other rotor? Rotors are sold singulary

This is a pure sales convenience for those of us needing one rotor only in case of unusual scoring, rust or cracking. Personally I've never seen new brake rotors sold in pairs.
Incidentally, your repair person installed an off-shore rotor on your car. If you go on line to: autopartswarehouse.com, partstrain.com and price brake rotors the off-shore made units cost anywhere between $25.- $35 for cars and slightly higher for trucks. These two places also sell premium parts but you'll notice that the price goes up drastically. Most people will not spend money to buy top quality important brake products. Glad to say I'm not one of them.
If you walk into NAPA, Car Quest or any independent auto parts store any American, British or Canadian brake rotor will cost nearly twice as much as the off-shore (China,Taiwan) products. The sales person will explain the major difference of these products to you.The name of the country their made in will be plainly stamped on the end of the box.
If you live in a northern climate and are subjected to snow and salt the off -shore items go to he*l quickly. They rust, corrode and warp faster than their American or Canadian cast iron counterparts. If you can milk two years out of them your doing better than average.
Generally speaking the metallurgy and annealing properties are less than perfect.
I hope someday that every brake repair shop will be required to stamp on a receipt where the replacement parts are produced and who exactly produced them.
Until then places like Midas, Monroe Muffler, Auto Zone and independent mechanics buy the least expensive rotors possible and over charge we the consumers. I wish people were more informed about the substandard replacement brake parts that repair people use.
If you stick to AC-Delco, Wagner, EBC, NAPA and Car Quest's best you've done your homework.

I have worked in the parts and auto repair industry for years. The rotors are sold individually. They are often sold in groups of two to do the job correctly. Doing just one will possibly result in pulling to one side when you brake harder. Also in the industry it increases ticket size and dollars. Many people who work on their own cars will replace just one, it works fine just as long as you are aware of the consequences. To properly guarantee the quality of a brake job, replacing two at the same time is necessary.
