Babies shouldn't have milk until they are a year old. Rice cereal mixed with formula or breast milk is a good start. Stage One veggies and fruits are good starters as well. If your baby is doesn't want to start eating jar food, don't force the issue, it just means he/she isn't quite ready yet. Try again the nex day, and usually they say start with a couple to three spoons (baby spoons) full. Use only one food for two-three days, though. You don't want to start giving a variety of foods in case they are allergic to something. That way, if your baby is allergic to a certain food, you will know exactly which food not to give anymore.

If your baby seems satisfied by regular breastfeeding or 32oz of formula a day, then you don't need to feed anything else.
If your baby still seems hungry after that, you can start some cereal. Pick one baby cereal - rice, barley, oatmeal, whichever to start with. Mix a tablespoon of cereal with enough breastmilk or formula in a bowl (so the taste isn't totally foreign) to be runny and give by spoon. (Never in a bottle!) Start with once a day - whichever time of day works for you and baby. Make sure this is the only new thing for a week - to watch for allergies. Once you've got one cereal down, pick another. Increase the amount and number of times a day as your baby shows you he or she is ready for it. Work your way thru all the cereals first. Then start green veggies. You want to do sweet veggies like carrots and sweet potatoes and fruits last - babies LOVE sweet stuff.

You can start on rice cereal now, mixed with breast milk or formula.
After that you can try simple, single ingredient foods (these will be tagged as "Stage One" if you buy your baby food, which I did), one at a time for three days so as to determine if your child has any allergies (if you try a variety all at once you won't know what your baby has an allergy too).
Don't worry about baby eating three meals a day; you're just getting baby used to trying new foods; they still depend on milk right now.

Usually rice cereal is the first thing added to baby's diet after breast milk or formula. Then slowly you can add vegetables. introduce only one vegetable per week to monitor for any allergies. Go with the most pleasant veggies first holding off on those with a stronger taste until last. Then you can add fruits using the the same weekly schedule. This will hold your baby until he/she is older. Remember though only small amounts, don't overload with food.

Call your pediatrician. Sometimes, depending on the health of the baby, size of the baby etc, you can give a small amount of baby cereal.
I believe you start with rice cereal, plain and very runny. Get baby spoons (coated in rubber). Start with just one small meal early enough in the day that should it cause gas, or pains, you won't be up all night with a fussy baby.
As soon as you start introducing all the new and wonderful foods you start finding things that don't agree with baby's tummy.
The general rule of thumb is to try something, skip a day and try it again. If there is the same amount of fussiness on the on days as the off days, then you could probably consider that a food that the baby can have.
Before you start any new diets, you should have a conversation with your pediatrician.

I assume you mean breast milk or formula - cause you can't give a 5 month old real milk.
You can introduce one easy to digest baby food. If you are breast feeding try infant cereal. Keep it watered down, not thick.
If you are using formula the iron in the formula and in the cereal might be too much and make the baby constipated. Try a stage 1 baby food instead.
Both of my daughter's first foods were baby applesauce. They both loved them. Then I introduced pears, peaches, sweet potatoes and whatever else came in a jar.
Contrary to popular belief, giving a baby fruit first will not make them like veggies any less. I gave both of my girls fruit first and they still like veggies.

My daughter is 4 months old. Her doctor has her cereal. She started her off with rice...and Then I got to give her the 1st foods...But Like i started with green beans, she ate them for 3days before i started her own anything else... that way to make sure she could handle it and wasn't allergic to it. She was eating around 8 ounces ever 2 to 3 hours. is why she was started on her cereal and 1st foods.

5 month olds should be eating rice cereal for babies twice a day. You can also introduce Stage 1 baby foods. This is usually apples, pears, peaches.

You should start with cereal, typically rice since it's easiest on the tummy. Then you can introduce other grains (oatmeal, etc.), then veggies and fruits, then meats. You should hold off on citrus fruits, whole milk, honey, peanut butter, fish, and egg whites for the first year due to risk of allergies. Obviously puree the food first or buy jarred baby food.

pureed carrots or pureed pears or apples. any fo the stage one foods are fine. i just talked to ped yesterday about solid starting since my son is 4 months and i am going to start him on rice cereal somtimes. she did say that soemtimes carrots makes them constipated and apples may leave a rash on their face but it's not because they are allergic it's mostly because the acidity in the apples
PS my doc told me that you wait at least 3 days between each food when introducing them in case for some reason there is an allergy and you don't want to upset their tummies
