I lived in Europe for nearly 3 months on the Deutschland/Nederlands (Germany/Netherlands) border, and I was shocked at how much Europeans hate each other (maybe even more then they hate the U.S.). Every time I went to Nederlands, and explained I was a U.S. citizen living in Germany, the Dutch would **** a brick. "why do you live with those skinhead nazi *****"." Same with the Germans when I would say, No, I'm going into Nederlands today, "why would you want to go to see the Dutch? Who gives a **** about the Dutch". This attitude was prevalent towards any country. I would even go as far as to say that most Europeans seem to like Americans (although not our government) more then they like other Europeans. Is this all a legacy from WWI/WWII/The Cold War? I have lived in the D.C. area my whole life, so it is ridiculous to me that people from different cultures can't get along. So what is the basis for Europeans (in general, not limited to German/Dutch) distaste for one another?

Europe has a pretty, tumultuous history with each other. I mean if you look back in history there are so many wars between the countries that I am sure some predjeduces have grown over the centuries. Also, though alot of Europe is under the " European Union" that in no way means that they are united as a people. Each country has thier own language or dialect, cultures, and economic systems so I think it is mainly just biases and bad mis understandings that are causing the problems. Just because they are connected via land mass they are all acting as seperate entities.

It's because people are irrational and irritable, and there's all kinds of feuds and rivalries amongst the different European nations that stretch back for centuries. Neighboring countries always tend to have a certain antagonism and rivalry towards each other.

You also have to factor in WWI and WWII when it comes to German relations with other countries and vice versa. There is still a ton of hostility and resentment in countries that Germany invaded towards Germans.

It's the shared world hatred of America that lets these countries briefly forget their intense hatred of each other (even though at the same these people in other countries immerse themselves in American pop culture and media.)

The history of Europe is one of constant warfare from the rise of the first nations and/or cultural groupings to the present, including many holy wars, religious wars, revolutions and two world wars.
Nationalism is rampant with each group and/or country blindly clinging to the ridiculous idea that they and their country is superior to all others.
Further, they are often divided by language, custom and preferences.
Remember also there is a limited amount of natural resources in Europe and each group is parring for its share of the same.

Everyone has long since ceased to trust one another.
Sadly, all of it is idiocy on their part and too much ego fueled pride.

may it all be well with you.

In a way it's the same in the US. People dislike other states. I know I can't stand drivers from the next state over and curse them out for their idiotic driving habits when they dare to venture onto my states roads. Different states try to steal businesses, tax revenue, and lure high earning individuals. Jokes are told about inhabitants of certain states and there is a general feeling that your home state is superior to all others

Hi! I absolutely agree with you. I've also lived in D.C. and I know what you're talking about. I believe that much of the animosity comes from world history. The other part is competitiveness. I just try to be myself and stay in the middle. Best wishes!
