Usually they set up shelters, a school, church any place away from the water. If you know it's coming and you can get off the island, you should go.
Not to worry, you always get plenty of warning before a hurricane arrives.) Someone will direct you someplace safe.

The bathroom! Board up your windows, slap some duct tape on your sliding glass doors and "hunker down". Normally we just stay around the house unless something happens (like a window blows out) and then you head for the bathroom, since it usually has an extra ceiling layer.
But schools and churches both set up shelters during a storm. But I can't stand being away from the house - the anxiety about wondering what happened is too much for me. I'm not sure how much it helps to go inland, I mean there isn't much "inland" to go to! I'd rather be low and near the water, than up high on a mountain when the wind starts picking up...
While it's always good to be prepared, let's just hope that the good luck holds and we make it through another season without any stories to tell!

people who say inland obviously have never been here...since the islands are only 3 miles wide there is no inland on the island!
and since Dean is headed South of us tomorrow..kassar has a good answer......there will also be lists of shelters in the papers Friday......churches, the armory on STT.....but checking into a good hotel like Frenchmans Reef or Sugar Bay has a lot to be said for it.!!!!! Food, generators, dry beds......

Inland. They probably have shelters set up, but I would seek out a hotel or other location that would be equipped with a generator.

Inland. Probally your best shot if you can't get off the island.
