My neice has asked me to have a look at her HP laptop.On bootup it is looking for a power on password.Do any one have any ideas on this please

Ask her for the password?
Most newer laptops store the bios password in flash memory so you can't just erase it by taking out the internal battery..

Okay even though i laughed at the guy who advised that you need to return it from where you stole it. I must say that I agree partially with him.

My reason for saying this is not to stress you out but what you should do is return it as he said. The dealer / place you bought it from should be able to solve this problem speedily.

That is probably a setting in the BIOS...enter it and disable that option (assuming you can get into the BIOS).
