have a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am GT with a 2.4 liter quad 4 engine. It is also a 5 speed with 154,000 miles. My car ran fine until i put a for sale sign on it in my front yard(go figure:). The other day i went to crank it to wash it off from sitting under the trees and there was nothing but a click. Well after about 6 clicks it started turning over BUT would not crank. I turned the key off and try again and there is a click again. Sometimes it might take 2 turns of the key and sometimes 6 or 7 times before the motor starts turning over. Not sure what the deal is so out of curiosity I had my wife come out and try get it turning over(after a couple of trys) and I sprayed starting fluid into the breather. It acted like it was going to crank then but to no avail. Could you offer any advice on this problem and thank you

Fix the solenoid or replace the starter. That what it is.
Good luck selling it!

Could be corroded battery terminals. Check the voltage on the battery itself (the posts). Then check the voltage on two terminals in the engine compartment that are connected to the battery terminals. The voltage should be the same (about 12 volts). If not, you have corrosion buildup between the battery posts and the cable terminals.

To clean it off, you can use a solution of about 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 cup of water, along with a wire brush. If it's really bad, you'll have to replace the battery and the terminals.

The most obvious thing to check out is the battery cable connection at the battery, that will certainly cause a hit or miss crank. And the second quirk, the won't run unless it's manually fed fuel, means it's not getting any gas.It might be smart to put a gallon or so in the tank just in case.

Contrary to the previous answer your problem isnt just the starter or solenoid. I assume by saying it turned over but did not start. Meaning there could be some other undelying problem. A new starter will only get rid of the "click" you refer to. But once the engine turns over that's all the starter is good for.
