My hybrid poplar trees are growing upward very fast, but not out; that is, there isn't much of what I guess is called the canopy. Is there anything I can do to train the tree to grow outward as well as upward? Someone told me to top the tree a bit, and the tree will grow outward. Is that true? Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Take some off the top. That forces growth out. If you want it to grow up...take the branches in.

This doesn't seem to be a very POPuLAR question. I did some research about poplar trees but could find nothing about this issue.

You may want to contact a local arborist ot tree surgeon, or the local agricultural extension service for an opinion.

Good luck.

Prune the upward growing branches (clip them off). this will help it fill out. There are certain poplar trees that have growth habits that don't let them get wide.. like the Lombardy. Hope that's not what you have.
