I'm from Germany. Sure, rent a car will be no problem for you. But most cars in Germany are manual, you have to ask for an automatic car and to pay more. To rent a car is more expensive in Germany than in US. Notice: You are allowed to cross European Borders. Not allowed is to go to East Europe (Poland,Czech, Hungary), but also forbidden is the UK and Italy. But you can go to Scandinavia,France,Spain... .
I have rent a car many times in the USA. Be sure driving in Germany is qiuet different. On highways you can drive as fast as you can. It needs much of concentration, because the lanes are more narrow than in the US. Parking rows are more narrow and the traffic in the cities is more chaotic than in the US. Traffic lights are not behind, but in front of the crossing. And there is no 4way stop sign. Stop means to stop till the last car has gone. Hope you have a good stay in Germany

I am going to Germany in the ending of August.
Eleven days to be exact.
I'm not doing the driving though, my friend is going to do it. I'm along for the ride. Yipeeeeee!!! I'm soooo excited!!!

But as far as a driver's license, you're all covered. Just follow the rules of the road in Germany. You can rent a car with no problem.

See you there!!! YIPEEEEEEE!!!!!

What the other answers have missed is the age limit.
If you are a fairly new or young driver you might run into problems with hiring a car.
As a rule you need to be 21 at least and have had your license for at least a year, young people often longer.
Check with the car rental people if you are near these limits. The limits do differ per car rental company and often change.

You want to "sell" (Verkaufen) the German Highway? Yes, you can rent a car to drive on the Autobahn with an American DL. Caution - the right of way rules are different in Europe. Please study the signs before you throw yourself at the mercy of European drivers. Example: At a 4-way stop - the one to your right has the right-of-way - not the one who was there first!!!!!!!! I wish you "Fahrvergnuegen!" P.S. Rent your car state side... is cheaper!

Not if you're associated with the military, as least you're not supposed to. Once you are here on orders, you're no longer just considered a tourist and you need to obtain a USAREUR license.

Not a problem. Go with a major hire company such as Avis or Hertz.
