Your daughter is a child genius. The Dell 1420 would be a perfect choice. Comes in a durable alloy case, almost kiddie proof.
A Bargain Hunter's Fantasy Laptop (Inspiron 1420 Review from PCMag.com - 6/26/2007)
The Dell Inspiron 1420 is destined to populate the homes of school-bound teens, sophisticated and unsophisticated computer users, and just about anybody who is looking for a terrific deal. The laptop's look has changed (for the better), and just because it's priced at $1,099 (direct) doesn't mean you'll get shafted with cheap processing parts. It's one of the few laptops, if not the only one, that gives you discrete graphics, a surplus of memory, different-color frames, and a host of other features that usually cost extra.
MACs have some compatibility problems with windows software.

Definitely go with the Dell. Macs will let you do some things on the Internet, but the Dell will let you do anything. Note, you may be able to make the Mac do more if you purchase a copy of Windows and Bootcamp (the new Macs can run Windows) but its better and cheaper just to buy a PC -- I've had good luck with Dell and also recommend HP or Toshiba.
Good luck & email me if you need more info.

I personally use a Mac. However, for an 11 year old, i'd go with the dell. A Mac is good for video/audio editing and stuff like that, but I don't think an 11 yr old would be able to unleash the cababilities of it. If she is confortable with a dell, you'd probably be better off sticking with the windows platform.

I'd go with the Mac. I've been using Macs since I was six, and the operating system is easy to find your way around, and there's a lot less danger that you'll download a virus or spyware by accident, especially if the primary user is someone younger in age. If you've been using a PC your whole life, it will take some getting used to the Mac OS, but I think overall, the Mac is a lot easier to get the hang of. Plus a lot of the software you'll need just comes with the computer.

Dell is better than Mac, but it's a pretty hard decision to make.
