It's short for "May God speed you on your way." Which I take to mean, may you get where you're going without problems.

It means to wish a traveller good fortune and a safe journey, expressed at parting. IE. God speed you on your way.

well it's a name of a ship, for one

as a term, it means "may the best be with you in your journey"
