He hasn't told us himself, but I'm expecting it any day now. He's the type of guy who'll wait until the day he plans on closing to tell us. How much lead time is he legally required o give? Am I due any severance? I'm in California by the way, and a salaried employee. It's a small business, in size (maybe 15 employees) not in revenue, and he is incorporated.

When my company moved from California, they moved me and my family.

They paid all the expenses, including the expenses to sell my house and to buy another.

They paid for a place to live while I found another house.

And everything is lower priced in North Carolina.

Now I can't say your company will do this, but it might be a good thing.

California, like every other state in the union, is an "employment at will" state, which means, basically, you have no rights. The employer can do with you as he will. There may be some specific exceptions in state law; but I believe most of those would deal with a situation where the company was closing down rather than just moving. Any benefits you get from the employer are at his discretion.

Are you in the US? He wouldn't be required to give you any notice unless the company is big enough to be covered by the WARN act, then it's 60 days - but doesn't sound like it would be covered.

You aren't legally due any severance - some companies will give it, some won't.

You would be able to collect unemployment compensation.

You have no rights in this case. I'm not trying to be a wise guy but it's his business. You've only been there two years and that's nothing. I don't want to rain on your parade, but the truth hurts.
