Venezuela's Chavez Seeking to Change Constitution to Allow Perpetual Re-Election
Wednesday, August 15, 2007

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez will present his blueprint for constitutional reform Wednesday, proposing sweeping changes expected to allow him to be re-elected indefinitely.

Chavez, who is seeking to transform Venezuelan society along socialist lines, unexpectedly announced late Tuesday that he would unveil his project before crowds of supporters at the National Assembly. He predicted it would bring renewed political upheaval to Venezuela.

Chavez's political allies firmly control the National Assembly responsible for reviewing his proposal as well as the Supreme Court. His critics accuse him of becoming obsessed with power and seeking to become a lifelong leader just like his close friend Fidel Castro.

Chavez rejects allegations that he poses a threat to democracy.

I don't know why anybody is surprised.

This is unfolding like a scripted play.

Hayek probably best explained how true socialism is bound to slide into dystopia (1).

Do you think if the left-leaning Chavez fans read this they would think it over? Probably not. When you get right down to it, many of them probably don't have much of a problem with dictatorship so long as it agrees with their sensibilities.

Venezuela will become the next object-lesson for rational people to heed and for class-envious lunatics to make excuses for.

As YOU by your sarcastic "liberal" comment threw down the guantlet,I will pick it up.

Chavez has been elected three times with overwhelming majorities.

This STUPID,is called a democracy. It may not be the type of democracy that YOU AMERICANS like as you have destroyed at least 13 democracies since 1950 all in pursuit of your bloody NATIONAL INTERTESTS (READ PROFITS) ,but it is a DEMOCRACY nontheless.

Bad enough you monumental hypocrites destroyed these democracies but than you good little Christian Americans replaced the democracies with your own bloody murderous/crimes against humanity right wing despots from the Shah of Iran in 1953 to Pinochet in Chile in 1973.

In the field of political science ,we use an old adage to describe the US and that is that :

"The US has never met a murderous right wing dictator that it couldn't love and support "
http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/CIAtimeline.html

Two years ago when the constantly war mongering US threatened /demonized/vilified Chavez, the powerful OAS, no longer controlled by the US , warned the US (specifically Brazil did) to not even think for a nano second to repeat the crime against humanity fiasco in Chile in 1973.

The world HAS had it with US war mongering !!!

So this demonizing/vilifying ignorant asker sees some Machiavellian dictatorial,anti-democractic evil in Chavez changing the constitution so that the elected leader is not limited to just 2 terms.

Well I guess Canada,Australia ,Britain and a dozens of other democracies that have NO LIMIT on the number of terms a leader can serve are nothing but vile ruthless dictatorships !!!!!

Again as a typical yahoo American who equates socialism with communism ,this pathetic seems unaware that aside from most western European democracies ,Australia,Canada and a dozens of other countries have socialistic governments to varying degrees.

That an American has the bloody gall to point a finger at Chavez who by the concensus of members of the OAS does not only not pose a THREAT or DANGER to Central or South America ,but Chavez has down nothing EVER compared to the atrocities that the US has committed.

Chavez HATES the US as does the vast majority in the world do based simply on the horrors/atrocities the US has perpetrated ,(see very partial list in URL above).

The history of the US in Central and South America is simply one in which the US and their corporations literally raped these countries and facilitated these rapes by fully supporting murderous right wing despots who kept their citizens terrorized by fear as the US and the plutocrats used and abused the peoples and stole THEIR wealth .Go read some bloody history .

Here is but ONE example of these friggin atrocities:

What really makes this askers comments the very height of hypocricy is this is coming from an American whose President has waged an ILLEGAL war of choice based upon a pack of fithy lies that so far has resulted in the slaughter of over 400,000 INNOCENT Iraqi civilians!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely incredibly sickening !!!!

No. We support much of what Chavez has done, but not all. If you want the real answer, not just the propaganda about us "libs" that you are use to. We respect Chavez for his economic ploicy which has improved the lives of the vast majority of venezuelans. We respect his policy of nationalization of oil in Venezuela, and uses the proceeds to develop the country and enhance the lives of venezuelans. Not make the rich american owners of oil companies here more wealthy, while venezuelans starve. And we respect his ability to stand up to a bullying american policy of control, extortion and robbery, one that has been in effect in central and south America for over 200 years. This is the history, whether you know it or not.
