Power ON. Press Del or F2 to open BIOS menu. Load "Fail Safe Defaults", save then exit. If still it can't boot from the hard disk. go back to BIOS menu. Go to Advanced BIOS features and make your hard disk as first boot device. Save and exit. If nothing happens, try replacing your HDD ribbon cable and reseating HDD power plug. If still nothing happens, boot sector of HDD may have been corrupted by a virus. Try repairing Win XP. If the repair process could not detect your hard drive, it could be defective.

Open your machine and make sure both the power and data cables are seated properly on the Hard Drive and check the data cable connection on the motherboard.

Get into the BIOS by observing text on the bottom of the screen & look for something saying "Press [] key to enter setup"and press the key specified. You may have to reboot if you do not hit the key soon enough.

Once in the BIOS, disable "Boot Up Floppy Seek" and check your boot order; normally its CD_ROM first and Hard Drive second. Make sure the Hard Drive is enabled. You may also want to check the BIOS battery on your motherboard with power disconnected.

Good luck!

Try to get into the bios. You may not be able to access the HDD at all. If that is the case, you will need to run from a restore disk. However, if the HDD is gone, running a restore from a CD will be futile.
