Or do they come from somewhere else after the fruit starts to rot? That doesnt make sense inside of a sealed house, does it?

fruit flys are attracted by the smell of (rotting) fruit. they actually don't eat the fruit themselves, but the yeasts that grow on them. once they're there yes they will lay eggs on the fruit, but unless you buy rotten fruti in the stor there will not be any eggs on the fruit when you buy it. Try to tthrow the stuff out when you see fruit flys around, as it usually means it has started to rot anyway

Fruit flies lay their eggs inside ripening fruit. The larvae hatch from the eggs and eat the fruit. The fruit does not have to be rotting for this to happen, perfectly good fruit is ruined by flies. If you buy fruit from the supermarket, it is unlikely to have live eggs in it as the fruit is often treated before sale to preserve the shelf life. Organic fruit, on the other hand, will often have live eggs in it which could hatch before you eat it if you leave it for a few days before doing so.

Fruit flies will also lay eggs in fruit sitting in a bowl in your house which will hatch a few days later if you leave them. The eggs will do you no harm if you eat them and unless you look really carefully, you won't even notice them. You will notice the larvae once they hatch.

If you are in a fruit fly area, eat fruit as soon as possible after buying or picking it and always cut it open first to look for maggots.
