It isn't about the cost. It's about the quality of the question. The stars are suppose to be given when someone finds a question that he/she finds interesting and believes this question should be viewed by others. At this point a star is given which brings it to other people's attention. As they are looking through the questions they come across yours as an example and see that it has, one or more stars so they see others found it interesting or informative and they now go to answer it.

I think it's because I star when something highly interests me, or if I've answered and I want others on my contact list to see the question and answer too. If you star a lot, though, someone may remove you from their list b/c it crowds their page too much. I thoroughly enjoy giving thumbs up, however.

Not everyone is cheap with giving stars. See, I just gave you one. But, there are sometimes the silly questions/ or attitudes that truly do not deserve a star, -- free or not.

I wasn't cheap with stars, even starred questions I didn't answer so contacts could answer them. Now I am treated like crap for doing that. No more stars from me.
