It has 135K miles on it, and usually runs just fine. Not used a lot since it has become the teen car when they start driving. When driving the car and it gets to 1/2 mark on the temp gauge it shudders, shakes and dies. She will start right back up, but when putting her into any gear, she shudders, shakes, and dies. After letting her cool, she will start and run well until the temp gauge gets to that 1/2 mark again, the same thing occurs. I am a mom with new teenage drivers. I love this car and think she will be best to start and learn on until they can get a car of their own. I am not sure where to start getting her fixed, but not put more money into her than she is worth. Where do I start looking? Thank you so much for your help! Have a great day!

If your car is like mine(89 sunbird le) which it is, if it has a 2.0 motor, your torque converter lockdown relay is bad. This part is not cheap. Instead of replacing it, I disconnected it. Its easy to find.
At the front facing end of the transmission there is a removable connection. It has two wires that connect to it. It is light blue in color. Its the only 2 wire connection at that sight. Remove it and you will find that there are actually four potential connections on the inside of the removable jack.
Removing this hookup disables the torque converter lockdown relay.
Your car will now refrain from cutoff at warm temps.
However you will lose your "cruising gear"
The car will become peppier but will also burn more gas especially at high speeds.
This is the best way to remedy your 3 spd transmission untill you are ready to repair it.
Or you could leave it off like I did.
When you open the hood, the trans is on the driver side.
The connector is blue with a blue wire and gold wire.
It is approx. 9 inches below the distributer cap and directly behind the radiator fan motor.
Good luck and enjoy your newfound power.
If you are still confused a transmission shop will gladly assist you, take your checkbook!

Does the 1/2 way mark mean its in the blue or red??? As long as the temp stays on the cool side of the guage, its not heat related. If they is a check engine that comes on, take it to Auto Zone and have them put it on the computer. The crankshaft sensor will do the same thing. It also just might need a tune up. Good luck!

Cavaliers are probably the most dangerous and unreliable car on the road. Depending on what engine you have will tell you the problem. If it is dual overhead cam then it is not worth keeping the car. if its single ohc then the problem sounds like the gap in the spark plugs might be too much or even oil fouled. Could be one of numerous things, you just gotta start simple then work your way out.

It's temperature related. And it re-starts but won't run.
The first thing to suspect is vapor lock. - Are there any heat shields missing that could allow part of the fuel system to be heated?
Did anyone re-rout a fuel line?
After that check the fuel pump. It might be the worn or the return line might be clogged.

check your oil, if its excessively low that may be the problem. or if there is a milky film on the dipstick your head gasket is probably blown.
