It's not as bad as it seems...it's true, an associate's degree in English isn't exactly what opportunities are made of, but I have a few ideas for you:
1) Many private schools will hire teachers who don't have a B.A. or higher, for less pay than their public school counterparts. It's a place to start. You could be an English teacher at one of these schools.
2) You can always use your good proofreading and organizational skills to become and admin. assistant. That's what I am, 5 years after graduating with a B.A. in Communications (talk about wanting to punch an old lady!) Admin jobs are hot right now- even though it's not exactly my life's dream to be an administrative assistant, it does make some pretty good money after you gain a little experience in it. Also, since so many admins don't have anything better than a high school diploma, employers are willing to pay top dollar for an admin with ANY degree. Look for a company that has a tuition reimbursement program as one of its perks- then after being there a year or so, you can go back to school and get another degree on their dime! It will be OK.

Actually, a teaching assistant job. With some emergency training you could do daycare. Teach conversational English as a second language. An administrative assistant. Also, you could find some entry-level management positions opened up for you in retail and sales. You could possibly think about the military or being a reservist, that will even give you rank of E-3 with an associates and give you $8000 education sign on bonus. Want a different government job? Go to www.usajobs.gov. Or go to the nearest airport with your resumes and turn them into the ticket counter and ask them to deliver them to the operations officer and get a union job with usual med/dental benefits and free travel. There's many things you can do, it depends on what do you want to do?! However, don't blame other people for 'your' choice of degree. If you let yourself be 'forced' into it, then you are the problem, don't be weak. And don't worry, the Associates in English doesn't limit you to a future in English, you can get a Bachelors in whatever you want, Microbiology, Criminal Justice, International Studies, Physics, French, Sociology, Fine Arts, or even Underwater Basketweaving if it's available. And don't ever think education is a waste of money, it's the one thing people can't take from you.

You can be anything you want. Maybe sub teacher or receptionist. Just apply yourself for any type of job and that's good when taking test and getting to the next point of the application. Sometimes you have to start off slow and work your way up!!! :)

Well... you could always write/report articles at a newspaper. They are always looking for people that are up on their english. I would suggest you go back to the school that you got your degree in and find out what careers are offered with your program.
Or find out what (other) students have done with similar degrees. Believe me they have information, I just filled out a survey on what my career is and blah blah blah.
*** I highly suggest that you go and talk to the school and find out what others are/have done!***
