I think that rap began as a voice from the black community. It was the first time the youth of black America got a chance to speak out. It was an opportunity to create a culture for the oppressed and unheard people. Hip hop is the love child of the civil rights movement. So in a sense it did start as the black voice, but as it became more popular it reached audiences for beyond black neighborhoods and communities. It became a universal voice.

I cant speak for everyone else, but what made me a fan was the lyricism from the early to mid 90's.
Today's rap is more about beats and swagger than it is about lyricism. There came a point from 2000-2005 where it was trendy to like hip hop music. Eventually, it became accepted by the mainstream public, which is why you see Jay Z in HP ads or G Unit with their own line of sneakers.

All music is universal.
Before, rap music was only getting played on
AM radio station 1580 K-DAY, and the
videos never got played. So a lot of black
folks were listening to "white" music, and
we actually enjoyed it.
I used to like Madonna, Boy George, David Bowie,
Duran Duran, and more. Why? It was good music, and that's what we were exposed to.
Now, rap music is popular all over the world, not just on one station, and Whites, Asians, old, and young have an appreciation for this style of music.
It's not just "Black " music anymore.
:~)

hmm i guess its the same reason some black kids and adults listen to rock music or any other genre.
rap usually count on the lyrics to put out a good message.
i know there are many rap haters because the famous ones talk about sex, money, being famous, getting laid, etc.. but like any other genre you have to search for the good ones.
theres nothing really to understand you just take it as it is =]

people listen to whatever they are feelin, whatever they can connect too. despite of your color, everyone can connect to music. whether it's rap, rock, country, techno etc. music, i believe is universal. anyone of any color can listen to whatever they want. i know ur not saying they cant, but i just feel that is the best way i can describe it.
im white, and i can and DO listen to everything, every genre. you'd probably laugh at my CD collection :)
my favorite will always be hip hop & rap though. i love a good beat, something i can bounce my head to.
i dont think that just because one culture or race basically created a genre, that only that culture or race can listen to it.

music is music. it's for everybody.

There are plenty of white rappers out there as well. You got different styles of rap like different styles of rock. I like listenin to that Gangsta Sh*t style, but I haven't ever gone through those struggles that they are spittin. All the stuff they market through MTV and the radio is universal, black white asian whatever. Some of my fav rappers are AZ, Cormega, Murs, Deltron 3030, Mobb Deep, Masta Ace, Atmosphere. Each on has a different style and genre of rap. Some hood rappers will appeal more to black people because what they are talking about will never apply to a suburbia white kid. Go on youtube and check some of those artists out and you will see that rap isn't just black music. Its poetry mane.

well let's see,i am a white 41 year old woman and i listen to rap. I believe the only reason (to my knowledge anyway) that its considered black music is because of the sound. In most cases it just sounds better when it's done by someone who is black rather than white or anything else.

I listen to rap for the same reason you listen to whatever you like to listen to. Plain and simple: I like it. Even though I'm white I can relate to SOME of it. I don't follow trends. I am my own person. I don't care what other people think I should be listening to. Everyone has different tastes. Hell, I don't criticise anyone for what they're into. More power to ya.

I think the majority are black. Are a few good white ones. Good question, I have been trying to figure that one out! Makes no sense to me. White kids dress black, whats up with that! Now where I live all kids in school K-12, have to wear uniforms! About time, they wore their pants down past their ***. Got off your question! I think they do it to be cool, fit in.

that's a real stupid question. it's called black music because mainly black people listen to it (just like R&B and gospel music). but that doesn't mean that white people can't listen to it too. just like rock, it's called white music cuz the majority of white ppl listen to it. but i know plenty of black people, including myself, who listen to it.
