It depends - is he a jewelry man? Some guys like to wear rings and necklaces but other hate the thought as they think it might make them more feminine.
If this guy already wears jewelry then go for it! I'm sure he will appreciate it and remember you do not need to make it expensive but nothing cheap as its the thought that counts. If you find a ring that relates to him in some way (Reminds him of his hobby, soccer team, most memorable moment in life etc) then he will appreciate the effort, not the price tag.

Since you have to ask, the obvious answer is "Don't get him a ring." Yes, that is a period after the word ring.
A ring is very personal. If you are not sure it is a good thing to do, then it is not a good thing to do!
There are too many pitfalls here to even talk about. Just get him something you now he will like. If you don't know what he will like, then that is just further proof that you have no business giving him a ring. And don't give him after shave or other personal stuff unless you know it will be ok.
